Job Title: Surgical Technologist Job Specialty: Surgical Job Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 10 Hours Day (0630-1700) Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours per week Experience: One year of experience in a surgical setting preferred; experience in a specialty field preferred License: Registration as a Surgical Tech is required for associates working in specified locations. A person performing Surgical Tech functions within the scope of another clinical license, certification, or registration does not need to register as a Surgical Tech. Certifications: - Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association - Certification in Surgical Technology from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or Tech in Surgery certification from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) Must-Have: Basic computer skills Job Description: - Work under the supervision of the surgeon and registered nurse. - Assist surgical team during procedures by arranging, inventorying, and managing the sterile set-up of instruments, equipment, and supplies. - Utilize physician preference card to identify necessary supplies and equipment; update preference cards with necessary changes. - Set up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure. - Prepare solutions and medications, properly label, and report amounts used for charting. - Anticipate needs of the surgeon using the surgeon---s preference card. - Provide supplies or equipment upon request for the surgeon, nurses, and anesthesiologist. - Assist with draping sterile fields; drape and cover operating and instrument tables. - Perform appropriate counts with the circulator prior to the operation, before incision is closed, and as needed. - Deliver surgical specimens/cultures from the operative field to the circulating nurse. - Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique during procedures by checking package integrity, indicators, and opening procedures. - Prepare and sterilize supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures. - Review and replace supplies following procedures; discard expired medications per protocol. - Assist with terminal cleaning of operating rooms; return equipment, supplies, and instruments as required, and prep rooms for the next patient. - Hold retractors or instruments, manage sponges or suctions at the operative site, apply electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, cut suture material, connect drains to suction apparatus, and apply dressings to wounds. - Provide on-call coverage outside of standard scheduled hours per department and/or facility policy. - Communicate effectively with surgeons and nursing staff. - Anticipate possible problems or complications during cases and adjust quickly to handle emergent cases. - Maintain efficiency under stress and with irregular working hours. - Adhere to department procedures and acceptable protocols. - Apply knowledge of the dress code related to Standard Precautions and consistently wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). - Report any life safety issues, environmental concerns, or process deviations to the immediate supervisor. - Participate in quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and research activities. - Engage in professional and program development by attending department in-services, meetings, and by sharing expertise to enhance patient care and staff development. - Assist with the education of new staff and students. - Demonstrate effective time management; be proactive in prioritizing workload and meeting productivity requirements. - Adapt to rapidly changing technologies, policies, regulations, census, and staffing through priority setting and flexibility. - Floating may be required to any designated location within prescribed distance or identified float zone; float assignments may include duties outside of original assignment in accordance with policy.
